The Keeper of New Life

Every new life begins with a threshold — a moment between what has been and what is about to become.

In ancient Greek tradition, Eileithyia was the goddess associated with childbirth and labour, called upon during one of life's most powerful transitions. She was the guardian of that sacred moment when new life enters the world.

Here, Eileithyia — The Keeper of New Life stands beneath a flowering tree, surrounded by a landscape beginning to awaken.

One hand rests gently upon the life growing within her, while the other remains open — a gesture of trust, surrender and quiet readiness. She does not command what comes next. She simply stands present within the moment.

Around her, the natural world echoes the ancient rhythm of birth and renewal. Blossom opens upon the branches, new growth rises from the earth and the hare sits peacefully beside her — an enduring symbol of fertility, abundance and new beginnings.

Above, the moon watches over the landscape while the first warmth of light touches the distant hills. Night has not quite ended and day has not quite begun.

She stands between the two.

And hidden within the trunk of the tree is the spiral — the continuing journey of life, reminding us that every beginning grows from something that came before.

This painting was inspired by a request for a goddess connected with fertility and birth, and within Eileithyia's story I found something equally beautiful: the sacred act of accompanying another person across a threshold.

There are moments in life when we cannot walk the path for someone else. We cannot control their journey or know exactly how it will unfold.

But we can remain beside them.
We can offer our hands, our knowledge, our reassurance and our presence.

The Keeper of New Life honours not only those who bring new life into the world, but those who quietly stand beside them as they do.

A reminder that sometimes the greatest gift we can offer another person is simply to say:
I am here.
You are safe.
I will walk beside you.
