The Bluebell Keeper

Some stories are not passed down in words.

They wait quietly in the things we treasure.
Beneath the moon, where bluebells gather around the roots of ancient trees, the Bluebell Keeper rests while the little folk move unseen amongst the flowers.

This painting was inspired by a picture that hung above my mum's bed for as long as I can remember. Given to her in the 1940s, Bluebell in Fairy-land remained with her throughout her life. Mum loved fairies, and today I still have that picture, in its original frame.

Now, almost eighty years after it was given to her, its story continues.

I have not tried to recreate the picture exactly, but to remember it through my own eyes — bringing its bluebells, woodland and fairies beneath the moon and into the world my paintings have become.
The Bluebell Keeper is the first of my Fairy series, and perhaps the most personal.

A painting about childhood wonder, the things our mothers leave with us, and the little pieces of magic that somehow find their way from one generation to the next.

For Mum — who believed in fairies before I began painting them. 💙
